Hemp-lime can support the moisture response of a wall, but it does not replace diagnosis of the cause. Surface condensation, thermal bridges, rain penetration, rising damp, plumbing leaks and construction moisture require different checks and remedies. Applying a render without understanding where the water comes from may mask a symptom while leaving the problem open.

What hemp-lime can do
The biocomposite is hygroscopic and vapour permeable: it can take up and release some airborne moisture, moderating short humidity swings. Experimental studies nevertheless show that the result changes with density, formulation, thickness, finish and air movement. A low-permeability paint or incoherent build-up can reduce the contribution of the assembly.
What it cannot replace
- repairing roofs, rainwater goods, pipes or joints that admit water;
- managing rising damp after examining salts and masonry;
- correcting thermal bridges on the basis of survey and calculation;
- ventilation and heating appropriate to occupancy and use;
- drying and checking residual moisture before finishes are applied.
A diagnostic sequence
Start with the history: when the problem appears, whether after rain or in cold months, in which rooms and on which surfaces. Then inspect visually, record air temperature and relative humidity, check surface temperature and dew point, assess moisture in masonry and examine salts, services, roof and ground. Thermography and invasive tests are useful only when they answer a defined hypothesis.
When it may be appropriate
A hemp-lime render or system can be assessed after abnormal water entry has been stopped, where substrate and salts are compatible and the design calls for a vapour-open finish. In historic fabric, reversibility, adhesion, base details, drying time and heritage constraints also matter. The solution is specified for the case rather than selected from a slogan.

The WHO guidelines on dampness and mould prioritise preventing persistent dampness and microbial growth. The Italian National Institute of Health explains that excess water and moisture favour mould and that symptoms should be discussed with a doctor.
